"Wall Street ended a six-week losing streak with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 42 points on Friday. Italian Aa-2 local and foreign currency bonds were placed under review by Moody’s for possible downgrade and Greece’s debt problems continue to pressure the Euro. The market is volatile, reacting sharply yet lacking clear direction. Even though I had cautioned about not betting heavily in the market at the moment, this is an ideal speculators’ market. One must distinguish the difference between an investor and a speculator. The primary concern of an investor is preservation of capital; therefore, identifying a trend is important. An investor’s holding position is for a longer term and fundamental indicators play a more important role. A speculator is more technical and seeks out volatilities in the market. One mistake I see often is people switching the role from speculator to investor and vice versa. Very often a speculator might enter a position but when the position moves against him, he changes his position to a long term holding. This usually results in unnecessary, huge losses which could have been avoided if one understands the reason for that particular position: Was it an investment or a speculation?

This year is a great speculators’ market, a lot of opportunities but the profit targets have to be reasonable and stop losses have to be enforced. Good discipline will ensure successful trading. Just keep in mind, you will not make money on every position, but if you make more at the end of day and show profit, then that’s all that matters."
