Android Inc. is a small startup business based on the world’s largest venue for technology business incubators, Palo Alto, California. The concept of Android is developed based on the modifications made on the Linux Kernel. Google, seeing the potentials of this new mobile computing technology, bought the small company and spearheaded the future developments of the operating system. A collaborative project between the Open Handset Alliance and Google resulted in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) – a project tasked for the continuous development and release of Android for mobile computing services.
The collaboration was lead by Andy Rubin, the co-founder of Android and the team was comprised of Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White. The Google team focused on the development of this mobile operating system using the Linux kernel, an open source developer resource. As the development progresses, the team introduced and promoted the upcoming mobile operating system to popular mobile phone manufacturers and carriers, emphasizing that this particular mobile operating system will focus on flexibility and versatility, providing continuous developments through constant upgrades and updates. Before the release of Android, Google was already prepared along with the software and hardware partners needed to launch Android in full blast.
Google Android was finally released on November 2007 and the event coincided with the establishment of the Open Handset Alliance in support of the further development of the breakthrough mobile operating system. The alliance was comprised of 79 consortium members coming from hardware and software experts and telecommunications. Android applications were developed based on the Java programming language, offering object-oriented application frameworks. The license for Android remains an open source or free. Under an Apache License, Google made the entire source code available to the public, opening another door for future developments by users and other developers.
Google Android is Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system’s toughest rival, with a great number of mobile phone users switching to Android to get more features and access more open source applications. Some of the best Android apps that caught the eye of many mobile users include the Google Quick Search Box, Gmail, Latitude, Goggles, Google Talk, Google Contacts, Google Shopper, Blogger, Google Maps, YouTube, Buzz, Google Voice, Google Calendar, Google Finance and Google Earth. Google continues the expansion and development of Android, which includes the participation of the public through apps developed using Java that can be used on the Android platform.
